Non-Swimmers and/or Swimmers
1. Horse and Rider
For beginning swimmers, play in waist-deep water. Parents are Horses, children are riders. The riders mount their horses piggyback. On signal, riders try to pull each other off their horses. Game may be run as two-person contest or as battle royal with all teams competing at the same times.
2. Duck Tag
For non-swimmers and beginners. Play in waist-deep water. Play as regular tag except that a player is safe if he ducks completely under water when It is near a player does not have to stay under water more than two seconds; It must go after someone else when his quarry has gone under water.
3. Paddle-Wheel Push
Play in waist-deep water. Boys grasp ends of kick-board and try to force each other backwards. Neither player may touch his feet to the bottom
4. Candle Race
For swimmers and non-swimmers. Play in chest-deep water, on signal, all swim or walk toward their goal, carrying a lighted candle. If a candle is extinguished (other than by deliberate splashing by other players, the player is disqualified.
5. Nightshirt Relay
Divide parents and sons into teams. Have a nightshirt or pajama top for each team. Each team member wears the night shirt while swimming or walking his lap in this relay.
6. Ball Tag
This is played in waist-deep water. IT tries to tag other players by hitting them with a soft rubber ball. If IT misses the player he threw at tosses the ball back to him. Establish boundaries so that distances will not be great.
7. Water Dodge-Ball
This is played in waist high or chest high water. One team makes a circle and the second team uses a soft beach ball to hit the other team in the center of the circle. Play Dodge ball ankle deep in water and use a beach ball.
8. Touch
Play in chest-deep water. Divide the children into two teams and line them up in parallel lines five to six feet part. The leader calls out the name of an object that is equal distant from both teams—diving board, edge of the pool or a ball. All players rush to touch the object and return. The team returning first scores one point.
9. Balloon Relay
Children line up relay fashion in chest to waist deep water. Each is given an inflated balloon. On signal, first child in each team walks or swims to a turning line and back, butting the balloon ahead of him with his head. He may not touch it with his hands. The second boy repeats the action, and so on until all have run.
Variation-- Ping pong relay – The first player walk or swims while blowing a ball ahead of him to the turning line then back. He may not touch the ball with any part of his body.
10. Leap Frog Line
Line up in single file in waist deep water, have about 4 feet between each player. On signal the last player in the line leapfrogs over the one ahead, between the legs of the next, over the next, and so forth until he reaches the head of the line. The player now at the end of the line repeats the action. Continue until the children are in their original order.
11. Egg Race
Play in chest deep water. Give each team a spoon and egg. On signal the first player on each team puts the spoon in his/her mouth and the egg on the spoon and walks or swims to a turning line and back. If the egg falls off it must be replaced before continuing. The first team through wins.
12. Sharks and Whales
The children line up facing each other in about five feet apart. Behind each team is its home base, the side of the pool or a rope tied to buoys. When the leader calls SHARKS the shark team chases the whales, who try to reach the goal behind them before being tagged. If a Whale is tagged, he must join the Sharks for the next round. Winner is the team with the most members after a specified time.
13. Water Basketball
Play in waist deep water. For water basketball use a inflated inner tube and a soft beach ball. Bat the ball ahead of you in the water. First team to the score of 10 wins. Score 1 point for each basket.
14. Candy Hunt
At the end of the water fun scatter foil-wrapped hard candy on the bottom of the pool. On signal all children jump in and gather as much as they can.
15. Gold Rush
Use pennies or iron washers painted gold. Scatter them in water between knee and waist-depth. On signal, players try to get as many as they can in the allotted time.
16. Float Tag
Players are safe from being tagged so long as they are floating in any position.

Play in a swimming pool. One person is selected as "it." He/she closes his/her eyes and call out "Marco." Other players respond, "Polo." If you can tag another player, you are no longer "it."
For swimmers
1. Underwater tag
The tag count only if both people are under water.
2. Treasure Dive
Divide the swimmers into teams and have them line up at opposite ends of the pool. Toss a coin into the center. On signal, first player on each team dives in and tries to bring the coin back to his side. Score one point for the retriever.
3. Rescue relay
Divide the group into two teams. The first player on each team stays on the shore or side of the pool while the other goes into shoulder-deep water, facing the shore. On signal the first player grabs a towel and runs and swims to his teammates. He throws an end of the towel to a teammate who grabs it and is pulled to the shore. The RESCUED child then runs back into the water and rescues another. The first team finished wins.
4. Candle Race
Line up players on one side of the pool. At pools edge on the other side have one candle and matches for each player. On signal the dive in race across the pool, light a candle and return to the starting point carrying the candle. The winner is the first one to return with candle lighted.
5. Slalom Course
Anchor several barely inflated balloons about 3 feet below in a winding course 50 to 100 feet long. A child put on fins and a mask and snorkel and swims the course passing each anchored balloon.

7. Row Boat Relay (Fun on the Lake)
Divide the group into two teams, with a rowboat each in chest-deep water. All players get into their teams boat. Be careful not to over load boats. Provide a life jacket for each player on a signal. The first player one each team rows his boat with all team members aboard. To a turning line from 50 to 100 ft away and back to the starting line. He then leaps over board and the second player repeats the action. Continue until the last rower is back at the start.
8. Towel Rescue
Divide the group into 2 groups. Players are in shoulder deep water. Divide the group into two teams. Place one member of each team some distance from the others and give him a towel. On signal, he walks or swims to his teammate and tows him back to the start. The rescued person then becomes the rescuer and repeats the action, saving another team member. Continue until the whole team has been saved. First team to finish wins.
